Where does it hurt?

The location of your pain tells us a lot about what's actually driving it. Here are the four most common patterns we see — see if you recognize yours.

1. Front of the knee (around the kneecap)

Patellofemoral pain / "runner's knee." Worse going up or down stairs, after sitting too long, or during squats. The most commonly misdiagnosed knee pain we see.

2. Inside of the knee (medial)

Medial meniscus or MCL involvement. Often comes with clicking, catching, or feeling like the knee "gives way" — common after twisting injuries or in people who pivot a lot.

3. Outside of the knee (lateral)

IT band syndrome or lateral meniscus. Frequently shows up in runners, hikers, and cyclists — a sharp ache on the outside that gets worse with repetitive bending.

4. Back of the knee

Baker's cyst, hamstring tendon, or posterior capsule. Often a deep ache or fullness behind the joint, worse with full extension or after a long day on your feet.
